4 Free Tire Tips from Your Friends at Direct Tire

The 3 most important factors in maximizing the life of your tires are:

PROPER INFLATION: This is easily accomplished by using any air vending machine or with a tire gauge. The manufacture’s recommended tire pressure is stamped into the side wall of nearly all tires. Over inflation is as dangerous as under inflation. You should check you inflation at least every third time you add fuel. Many slow leaks aren’t detected until it’s too late.

ROTATION: Proper rotation greatly increases the lifetime of your tires. Tires on the front and the rear develop particular wear patterns that will quickly wear your tires down if not rotated to the opposite axle to compensate the wear patterns. Higher quality tires should be rotated in a modified “X” with rear tires crossing to the front and front tires going directly to the rear. HOWEVER older or cheaper tires should be simply moved front to rear as they do not react well to this pattern. Tires should be rotated every 5000 to 7500 miles while 4wd vehicles should be rotated every 4000 miles.

Tire Balancing: Should only be necessary if there is a problem. However many times the problem is overlooked. Slight vibration in the steering wheel is the most common warning sign. Also if your rear view mirrors vibrate or you feel a vibration, notice a weight missing (can be seen clearly as a clean spot), or if you hit a curb or pot hole. “Heavy Spots” often develop in tires not properly rotated; balancing can extend the life of such a tire.

Direct Tire’s Free Tire Tip # 4 Often when it feels like one or both of your front tires are shaking or “fighting” you especially in turns, it’s not your front tires damaged but one or both of your rear tires. Often with a broken belt in a rear tire the front tires have to fight the rear tire(s) to track properly.
